Colleagues,

On behalf of Ruth Gates, Ilsa Kuffner and myself, I am pleased to bring the following position to your attention. Applications go to Ruth Gates, but will be screened by the three of us.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW
We seek a postdoctoral fellow to work on a funded synthesis project at the Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis (https://powellcenter.usgs.gov) titled “Local-scale ecosystem resilience amid global-scale ocean change: the coral reef example.” The working group is led by Drs. Peter Edmunds (CSUN), Ruth Gates (UH/HIMB) and Ilsa Kuffner (USGS), and consists of 18 participants of varying career stages and backgrounds. The group is focused on elucidating geographic, biological, ecological, oceanographic, and physical features that characterize “oases” coral reef communities and evaluating the potential of coral reef oases to catalyze broader-scale ecosystem recovery. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be dedicated to this working group for 18-months and the position will function as a core facilitator for the effort and engage in all aspects of the project. Tasks include data discovery, data management, analysis and synthesis, and the preparation and submission of manuscripts. We are seeking a candidate with extensive experience in the broader field of coral reef science, proven ability to integrate, manage and analyze large data sets and the flexibility and communication skills necessary to work with a diverse group of scientists in a dynamic group environment. Applicants should have a PhD and preferably post-doctoral experience in an appropriate field, a strong publication record, and experience with computational and statistical analytic tools (e.g., R and Matlab) suitable for exploring large data sets. The position will be based in the Gates Lab at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (http://www.hawaii.edu/himb/) and includes periods of work at the Powell Center (Fort Collins, CO), California State University, Northridge, and the USGS St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center. The annual stipend is $55,333 and the position has a preferred start date of 1 March 2016. Applicants should submit their application package as a single pdf file consisting of a cover letter (including a description of career goals), full CV, and names and contacts details of three references (do not submit letters at this stage) to Dr. Ruth Gates at rgates at hawaii.edu<mailto:rgates at hawaii.edu>. Review of applications will begin on January 7, 2016, and will continue until the position is filled.
