MPA practitioners from 11 Caribbean anglophone countries visit managed areas
in Grenada and get lessons to apply back home as part of the 11th CaMPAM
Training of trainers course on MPA management. 

St. George’s, Grenada, February 21th, 2015.  

On Friday, the participants visited two MPAs and the surrounding areas to
learn about their management issues and stresses generated by the human
uses, namely the Woburn Clarke’s Court and the Moliniere-Beausejour Marine
Protected Areas.

The group witnessed (and smelled) the discharge from the rum distillery to
the creeks and rivers that drain into the Woburn protected area and the
impact of the discharge of excessive nutrients, sediments and pollutants on
mangrove wetlands, estuary and the coastal area of the Woburn Bay, which
have impaired the capacity for these natural systems to recover after a
hurricane (two pictures on the left). 

Later they observed agricultural practices and sites on the river where
cleaning takes place, which generates sediments and other pollutants to the
marine waters of the Moliniere-Beausejour Marine Protected Area. 

They were informed on ongoing or oncoming projects run by various government
agencies (including the National MPA Management Team) aiming to reduce
land-based threats to the MPAs. Funding from international organizations and
programs are supporting some of these efforts. 

The final stop was at the Moliniere-Beausejour coast where participants
observed the river drainage and snorkeled in the protected area marine
waters. The instructor Mr. Nimrod explained to the group the history of the
MPA and the impact of extreme weather events (hurricanes), land-based
sources of sedimentation and illegal fishing over the water quality and
coral reefs health. Nevertheless, Georgina Bustamante noticed “an
improvement in the condition of the fish assemblages, with more abundance of
parrot fishes and snappers, in comparison to a previous visit 2 years ago”. 

The participants’ observations and follow-on discussions enriched the
learning experience from previous lectures imparted by Steve Nimrod and
Roland Baldeo of the Grenada MPA Management Team.  At the discussion session
participants shared their local issues on the impact of fishing, pollution
and sedimentation on coral reefs and mangroves in MPAs.

management was organized and funded by the EU-ACP Biodiversity and Protected

. Como parte del 11º curso regional
“Capacitación de capacitadores en la gestión de AMP del Caribe” 

St. George, Granada, 21 de febrero de 2015. El viernes, los participantes
visitaron dos áreas marinas protegidas (Woburn Clarke’s Court y
Moliniere-Beausejour) y sus alrededores para conocer sus problemas de
gestión y las afectaciones generadas por los usos humanos.

El grupo fue testigo (y la olió) de la descarga de la destilería de ron a
los arroyos y ríos que desembocan en el área protegida Woburn; el impacto de
la descarga de nutrientes excesivos, sedimentos y contaminantes en los
humedales de manglar, estuario y la zona costera de la Bahía de Woburn, que
han afectado a la capacidad de estos sistemas naturales para recuperarse
después de un huracán (fotos de la izquierda).

Más tarde se observaron las prácticas agrícolas y los sitios en el río donde
la limpieza se lleva a cabo, lo que genera sedimentos y otros contaminantes
que son acarreados por el río a las aguas marinas del área marina protegida
Moliniere-Beausejour.

Se les informó sobre los proyectos en curso o que se avecinan a cargo de
diversos organismos gubernamentales (incluyendo el Equipo de Dirección
Nacional MPA) con el objetivo de reducir las amenazas terrestres a las áreas
marinas protegidas. Varias organizaciones y programas internacionales están
financiando algunos de estos esfuerzos.

La última parada fue en la costa de Moliniere-Beausejour donde los
participantes observaron el drenaje del río y bucearon con esnórquel en las
aguas del área marina protegida. El instructor Sr. Nimrod explicó al grupo
la historia de la AMP y el impacto de fenómenos meteorológicos extremos
(huracanes), fuentes terrestres de sedimentación y la pesca ilegal que han
afectado la calidad del agua y los arrecifes coralinos. Aun así, Georgina
Bustamante notó "una mejora en las condiciones de las comunidades de peces,
con más abundancia de peces loro y pargos, en comparación con una visita
anterior hace 2 años".

Las observaciones de los participantes y las discusiones que siguieron
enriquecieron la experiencia de aprendizaje de conferencias previas
impartidas por Steve Nimrod y Roland Baldeo del Equipo de Gestión de las
AMPs de Granada. En la sesión de debate los participantes compartieron sus
problemas sobre el impacto de la pesca, la contaminación y la sedimentación
en los arrecifes coralinos y manglares de sus áreas.

La edición 2015 del curso de CaMPAM que se prolongará hasta el 26 de febrero
fue organizado y financiado por el Programa de la Unión Europea-ACP para la
Gestión de la Biodiversidad y las Áreas Protegidas (BIOPAMA), con aportes
del Programa de Pequeñas Donaciones de CaMPAM-ECMMAN
