Dear Coral List-serve Members:
Please pass this announcement along to prospective undergraduate students....

Program: STEM Summer Intensive Research Program - Coral Reef Ecology

Brief description: This is an 8 week integrated summer research program on Coral Reef Ecology. The innovative program combines theoretical knowledge and research skills to support the flagship course of the program; Coral Reef Ecology Research Experience. In this project-based course, students will collaboratively select methods and conduct field and laboratory research to answer important questions in the field of coral reef ecology. Each student group will have a maximum of four students and a faculty advisor. The Research Experience course results in 3 major learning outcomes: a research plan, a research paper and an oral presentation in a public forum. Additional learning goals include gaining collaborative research experience including involvement in peer review of other group projects. The Coral Reef Ecology course will provide the theoretical basis for the program. The combined courses, Advanced SCUBA and Marine Ecology Field Research Methods, result in students becoming certified AAUS Scientific Divers (American Academy of Underwater Sciences). The Advanced SCUBA course prepares students to manage safe scientific diving and dive emergencies. Lastly, students gain competencies in a wide range of coral reef research skills in the Marine Ecology Field Research Methods course.
