[Coral-List] Flower Garden Banks at Night

[Coral Morphologic]

A frequent topic of conversation on the Coral-List is how to get young
people and the wider public interested in coral conservation. Coral
Morphologic collaborated with the popular band Animal Collective (members
of which are avid divers) to create a 23-minute conceptual night dive video
chronicling the fluorescent realm of the Flower Garden Banks National
Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico. It has already been seen by more
than 10,000 people in less than 24 hours, largely on popular music blogs.
This is an example of our approach to hybridize art and science in a way
that can captivate non-scientists with the cosmic nature of corals (and
thereby build human empathy and understanding for these brainless, eyeless
clonal organisms!).
