Dear List,
There is a phenomenon that I have observed and noted for about the last
10 years. That is:
While global change is bad for corals and coral reefs, it seems to
really benefit coral-reef scientists.
Here are some data:
1- About 10+ years ago, membership in the ISRS in ICRS years was about
1000. Membership is now ~1700 (a "run-up" year for ICRS).
2- Back in 1992 (the first year I went to ICRS) my guess is that there
were less than 300 delegates, maybe only 200. For 2016, the estimate is
about 2000.
3- Since 2005 I counted 109 papers in Nature or Science on the topic of
coral reefs. Of these, 67 mentioned some aspect of climate change.
4- In a recent issue of the ISRS journal Coral Reefs (Vol 34, #3), there
were 20 reports. 13 of these mentioned the applicability of the results
to some aspect of global change.
Too late to jump on the bandwagon??
