Dear coral-listers,

We kindly invite you to submit abstracts for oral and/or poster presentations for ICRS Session 66: *Human-natural coupled reef systems: Integrating indigenous and western sciences for sustainable management solutions*

*Session description*: During this time of rapid ecological and cultural change, it is imperative that diverse stakeholders work collaboratively to develop innovative solutions for effective coral reef conservation and management. Indigenous cultures possess immense knowledge of coral reef ecosystems acquired over thousands of years of intimate contact with reef environments. The integration of this accumulated body of knowledge, practice and belief with western science is increasingly recognized as an integral component of effective ecosystem conservation and management. More programs are needed that put indigenous knowledge at the forefront of management planning. This session will highlight research, education, and natural resource management initiatives that successfully synthesize traditional and western forms of knowledge to develop novel approaches to coral reef management and restoration. Speakers will address the unique challenge of working at this potentially sensitive interface and provide practical advice that researchers, managers and indigenous peoples can employ to develop the partnerships necessary to bridge the gap between western and traditional science for sustainable management.
