Program Description
The CIEE Tropical Marine Ecology and Conservation Program in Bonaire is a study abroad program for upper level, undergraduate students. The innovative 14 week semester program combines theoretical knowledge and research skills to support the flagship course of the program; Independent Research in Marine Ecology/Biology. Students conduct field and laboratory research to answer important questions in the field of coral reef ecology. The Independent Research course results in 4 major learning outcomes: a research proposal, a research paper, an oral presentation in a public forum and publication of a volume of an in-house journal. The Coral Reef Ecology and Tropical Marine Conservation Biology courses provide the theoretical basis for the program. The combined courses, Advanced SCUBA and Marine Ecology Field Research Methods, result in students becoming certified AAUS Scientific Divers (American Academy of Underwater Sciences) and competencies in a wide range of coral reef research skills. The Cultural History of Bonaire course ties the program to the island of Bonaire. In addition to the semester program, there is a J-term program and several short-term summer programs including an 8-week Intensive Coral Reef Research program. Classes are limited to 16 students.



Position Description

The Coral Reef Ecology Instructor is part of a team of professionals that work together to achieve specific academic and student achievement goals. The Instructor must be interested in all aspects of the success of the Research Station with excellent teaching and leadership skills and the ability to be an exemplary part of a team. The Instructor will teach:

Semester: Coral Reef Ecology (4 semester credit hours),

Co-teach Marine Ecology Research Methods (3 semester credit hours), and

Co-teach Independent Research (4 semester credit hours)

Summer: Marine Ecology and Biology of the Southern Caribbean (3 semester credit hours)

Coral Reef Ecology (3 semester credit hours)

And co-teach Coral Reef Ecology Research (4 semester credit hours)



This is a full-time academic position with significant responsibilities to the overall program. The academic team participates in CIEE activities including; the Outreach program, Public Lecture series, field trips, camping and other group activities. In addition to teaching responsibilities, duties will include supporting CIEE's research program, which includes field and laboratory research, analyzing data, report writing, proposal writing and manuscript preparation. The AAUS Dive Safety Program requires excellent planning and record keeping. Lastly, the instructor will assist with analytical needs in the laboratory and day to day operations at the field station.



Qualifications
The minimum qualifications are: a PhD in Biology, Marine Science or closely related discipline with an emphasis in marine ecology or biology (ABD possible); scientific diving experience and a comprehensive dive physical (AAUS); broad field research experience in marine ecology and excellent analytical skills; demonstrated ability to work as a team member; a commitment to education and research in marine ecology and conservation; an eagerness to work closely with students; an appreciation for field-based education; current certifications in First Aid, CPR, DAN Oxygen Rescue; DAN dive insurance; a driver's license. This is a physically demanding position.



Compensation

Salary range: $30,000 - 35,000, immigration expenses and round trip air fare are provided.
