 I would like to draw your attention to an open position to work as an
oceanographer/coral reef ecosystem scientist with NOAA's Coral Reef
Ecosystem Program (CREP), at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center
(position through the Joint Institute of Marine and Aquatic Research,
RCUH). A qualified individual will assist the Ocean and Climate Change team
at CREP to track the impacts of ocean warming and acidification across the
US Pacific, including the Hawaiian Archipelago, American Samoa, the
Marianas Archipelago, and the Pacific Remote Island Areas. The position
offers substantial time diving in these environments and the opportunity to
analyze large-scale spatial datasets collected across the wide diversity of
our sites in the Pacific.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of
Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine
and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries
Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in
Honolulu, Hawai‘i.

Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs,
satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with
applicable Federal/State laws.



MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.



DUTIES: Plans and implements oceanographic surveys and field operations.
Processes, analyzes, and interprets oceanographic data with the purpose of
examining the relationship between oceanographic processes and coral reef
ecosystem dynamics. Develops graphical and other synthesized data products
for presentation in reports, scientific articles, and outreach/educational
materials. Designs and develops software tools and data management
procedures to analyze, integrate, and visualize ecosystem data. Develops,
implements, and maintains procedures to process and produce data products
for current and historical data. Contributes to scientific manuscripts for
publication and presents research at various conferences or relevant
settings. Participates in research cruises, marine ecosystem surveys and
observation networks to assess and monitor coral reefs, which involves
field surveys, the deployment and recovery oceanographic instrument
platforms, and data transmission, analysis, and creation of data products.
Provides training and guidance in operating equipment, conducting field
surveys and processing data.



PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or
university in Oceanography or related field.

EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of experience conducting oceanography
fieldwork and processing and analyzing oceanographic data from in situ
instruments, water-quality sampling efforts, and/or various satellite
derived meteorological and oceanographic information sources. Experience
conducting oceanographic data analyses, time-series analyses, and other
procedures commonly used by practitioners. Previous experience at sea for
extended periods (twenty (20) continuous days or more) of time aboard
research vessels.

ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Solid knowledge and understanding of fundamental
physical, biological, and chemical oceanographic processes is required.
Knowledge and experience working with oceanographic instrumentation.
Knowledge of routine statistical procedures to perform data analyses.
Specialized knowledge in one (1) or more of the following areas: i)
near-shore wave modeling and analyses for islands, atoll, and other coral
reef environments; ii) field and laboratory methods used to measure and
analyze water quality variables; iii) numerical modeling and simulation of
hydrodynamic factors influencing near-shore marine environments. Must be
able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC)
and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security
requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent
Resident Alien. Must possess good written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manipulate large data sets using data analysis software packages
such as MATLAB or similar. Proficiency with the operation, deployment, and
data analysis of oceanographic instruments and sampling methodologies.
Ability to work independently and make decisions. Must possess strong
interpersonal skills. Proficiency with using basic office productivity
software tools, including word processors, spreadsheets, and MS PowerPoint.
Must be able to pass all training requirements, including but not limited
to basic boating, first aid, CPR, and oxygen assistance. Other training
requirements may include advanced coxswain training, advanced first aid,
and forklift training. Must be SCUBA certified (NAUI, PADI, etc.) and meet
the standards established by the program’s diver certification process
(which meets the standards set by the American Academy of Underwater
Science), and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to
complete UH/NOAA diving certification, which includes meeting the physical,
watermanship, academic, and experience requirements, and maintain
throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete SCUBA diving
advanced open water certification with a minimum of 40 dives and possess
good free diving skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain
throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions:
Must be able to meet and maintain US Department of Commerce (DOC), National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for
working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and
having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and
maintained throughout duration of employment.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work long hours outdoors at
various captive facilities and remote locations with high exposure to
sunlight, aboard research vessels and aboard small boats (15’-20’) in
coastal and oceanic waters. Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds of
scientific instruments, scuba gear and equipment unassisted. Post
Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain and maintain NOAA
Medical Clearance for NOAA diving requirements as well as for
embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels
which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining
the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation
Operations, and maintain throughout duration of employment.

POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS: As a condition of employment,
employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures
and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business
entity's policies and procedures. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business
entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws
and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not
limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or
criminal penalties, etc.).



SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Prior experience with a high-level data handling
program such as MATLAB, IDL, or similar. Working knowledge of ArcView GIS,
Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Experience editing, reviewing, and
developing data products for multi-volume scientific reports. Experience
working with electronics, instrumentation and other oceanographic
equipment. Experience with moored oceanographic instruments and Global
Positioning System (GPS) receivers and data. Previous experience in small
boat and personal water craft (PWC) handling. Previous experience with
SCUBA operations utilizing lift bags to position large (1000 pound) sea
