Coral Reef Ecology Internship Spring 2017

The CIEE Tropical Marine Ecology and Conservation program is a study abroad program for undergraduate students from US institutions of higher education. In addition to the academic program; CIEE hosts visiting scientists/groups; conducts research and provides outreach to the local community. The internship is a physically demanding position and is time and energy intensive and includes leading and participating in activities evenings and weekends.. Interns will assist in program delivery, residence hall management, academics, research, group dynamics, logistics, scientific diving and dive safety, student safety, and day-to-day errands. Duties include assisting with preparations for classes and labs/field trips, leading and organizing activities and field trips and hosting the public lecture series and visiting groups. Interns are also involved in CIEE's research program, which includes field and laboratory research, analyzing data, report writing, proposal writing and manuscript preparation. In addition to teaching responsibilities, duties will include activities in the evenings and weekends. The candidate should have the following characteristics: professionalism, the ability to work as a team member, a strong commitment to education and research in marine ecology and conservation and willingness to work flexible hours.

Minimum qualifications for the internship: BA/BS in Biology with an emphasis in Marine Biology or Ecology (MSc preferred), experience leading student groups and conducting research, AAUS Scientific Diver certification (or equivalent); dive equipment including full length wet suit; current certifications in Emergency First Responder, and Oxygen Rescue; scientific diving experience (minimum of 50 dives logged); DAN insurance and a comprehensive dive physical

Compensation: Shared accommodation at the Residence Hall will be provided to the successful applicant. Airfare will be reimbursed up to $750 and a stipend of $400/month will be provided. Lunches and dinners are provided during 16 weeks of the internship.
