(1) Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Physical Oceanographic Modelling (Position 329028)

Description: The Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellow in physical modeling and coastal ocean circulation. The successful applicant will join the research team at CMES and have the opportunity to participate in an exciting new interdisciplinary research initiative on Integrated Caribbean Coastal Ecosystems. The post-doc will work with a group that is developing a Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) model for the US Caribbean, numerical modeling to understand coral, fish, and sediment dispersal in coastal areas, and integrating historical physical oceanographic data into predictive model development.

The position is for two-years, with a preferable start date between October-December 2016.

Required Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography with a background in numerical modeling of ocean circulation. Preference will be given for experience using ROMS and working with biologists in biophysical coupled models, and a record of collaborative research.

Posted Salary: $45,000-$55,000

(2) Watershed Technician and Marine Tech (Position 329029)

Description: Under the direction of the Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) and UVI's watershed ecologist the successful candidate will provide technical support for watershed ecology research and be an active member of the research team at the MacLean Marine Science Center at UVI. The candidate is expected to work on multiple research projects of spatial nature, and will be expected to contribute to the advancement of the watershed research portfolio of the Center for Marine and Environmental Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to: (a) collect, analyze and distribute geographic and geospatial data relative to environmental and marine sciences research in the US Virgin Islands and the broader Caribbean region; (b) organize and maintain field and lab equipment; (c) perform field work duties; (d) assist and contribute to manuscript, report and research proposal writing and production; and (e) perform other duties as determined by the watershed ecologist and CMES Director.

Required Qualifications: (a) Master's degree in environmental sciences, geographic sciences, computational sciences or related field and 3 years of professional experience; (b) demonstrated knowledge and experience in Geographic Information Systems (specifically ArcGIS including spatial and geostatistical analysis tools); (c) demonstrated strong field research skills (d) demonstrated understanding of statistical and computational skills, including statistics (spatially and non- spatially explicit, spatial interpolation, spatial regression, etc); (e) demonstrated ability to work in team settings and meeting tight deadlines with tangible deliverables; (f) demonstrated verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with a range of clients and collaborators, including students, faculty, staff, professionals, organizations, and the general public; (g) strong desire to learn new skills and tools and receive instruction and training.

Preferred Qualifications: (a) Familiarity with marine and/or environmental research; (b) willingness to achieve Advanced SCUBA Diving certification within 3 months of hire; and (c) advanced statistical or mathematical/computational software (e.g., Matlab, SPSS, R, ArcGIS).

Physical Demands: Should be able to lift 50 pounds, perform strenuous activity, and be willing to work outside of standard workdays and in disagreeable conditions.

Posted Salary: $33,000 - $43,000

(3) Postdoctoral Research Associate in Acoustic Telemetry (Position 329025)

Description: Under the direction of the Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) Director and VI-EPSCoR Science Director, the successful candidate will work on acoustic tracking of marine animals, including but not limited to fish, sea turtles and macro-invertebrates, in the territorial waters of the US Virgin Islands. Other tracking systems including radio tracking and satellite tracking may be added depending on funding. Integration with the University of the Virgin Islands' Mare Nostrum project will include collecting, managing and using information from the CMES long-term data sets. These include data of water quality and environmental conditions and their effect on animal movement patterns. Ideally the post-doc will synthesize multi-species movement data to explore spatial patterns across trophic groups during periods of environmental change. The data will be used to answer scientific questions and hypotheses in the area of bio-physical coupled systems, movement ecology, impact of climate change on tropical ecosystems, ecosystem stability, etc. Along with utilizing the existing data set, the project will include field experimentation, animal tagging and tracking and/or simulation modeling. The incumbent will work as part of the research team at CMES and will contribute to the continued development of the acoustic telemetry research program at CMES, publish papers, and give presentations, with VI-EPSCoR Brewer's Bay Ecosystem Analysis Project as the focus of research.

Required Qualifications: PhD in marine science, ecology, bio-oceanography, fisheries or related field. Strong analytical and computing skills with a background in quantitative statistics, spatial ecology, and acoustic telemetry; Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication; Data acquisition, QA/QC and processing skills and management of large databases preferred; Knowledge of animal tracking, Geographical information systems, modeling and/or numerical techniques; Knowledge of oceanographic instrumentation; and Caribbean systems; Must have a high degree of motivation, and the ability to serve a diverse educational and cultural public constituency.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability/experience in supervising graduate and undergraduate students.

Physical Demands: While performing duties of job, employee will be required to stand, bend, stoop, reach, kneel, twist, grip items when necessary, hear and lift up to 40 pounds. Work environment: The noise level in the work environment will probably be moderate to loud at times.
