ONE MONTH until the start of the 3-credit graduate-level course, "Corals
from the Inside Out: Comparative Histopathology," which will be taught
by Dr. Esther Peters this summer at Nova Southeastern University's (NSU)
Oceanographic Center, Dania Beach, Florida, May 8-July 28, 2017.

This course presents the microscopic anatomy of scleractinian corals and
gorgonians (Phylum Cnidaria, Class Anthozoa) to support studies on their
ecology, physiology, reproduction, biochemistry, systematics, molecular
biology/genetics, immunology, embryology, and pathology. Topics covered
include histology; coral diseases; sample collection, preservation,
processing, and histoslide preparation (lecture and discussion only, no
laboratory); and slide reading of healthy and diseased specimens using
light microscopy and virtual microscopy. The course begins with online
(Blackboard) readings, research, and assignments. You will understand
corals as you never have before!

This summer, two options will be available for the face-to-face lecture
and laboratory portion of the course:

(1) Credit or audit students meet at NSUOC July 10-14 for one week, full
time (final exam for credit students will be given on July 14 and they
must complete assignments before the course ends July 28)

(2) Credit or audit students meet at NSUOC July 17-28 for two weeks,
half-time in the afternoon (final exam for credit students will be given
on July 28 and they must complete assignments before the course ends
July 28)

Non-NSU students need to contact Isabelle De Castro (id7 at nova.edu) to
learn how to register and complete the paperwork. The cost is $3,750 for
the 3-credit course or $1,875 to audit the course, plus application
($50), registration ($25), and lab ($10) fees. Students not living in
the Dania Beach area can reserve a hotel room at a discounted rate
(PLEASE CONTACT TRACY VILLANUEVA, tvillanu at nova.edu, TO OBTAIN
INFORMATION ON LODGING). All students will be responsible for travel,
hotel, and meal expenses. No scholarships are available.
