Two graduate student opportunities in sponge biology/chemical ecology

We welcome applications for two qualified graduate students in sponge biology/chemical ecology. Preference will be given to Ph.D. applicants, but highly qualified M.S. applicants will also be considered.

Two projects, funded by the National Science Foundation, seek to characterize variation in biochemical adaptations of Caribbean sponges across depths (shallow to mesophotic coral reefs) and geographic scales (sites across the broader Caribbean basin). These projects will complement data obtained by collaborators on sponge-associated microbial communities and their functions.

We seek students with strong backgrounds in marine biology, environmental science, or equivalent disciplines, preferably with experience in biochemistry and/or marine chemical ecology. Students must be SCUBA certified, with AAUS certification preferred. Technical diving experience (rebreather and/or trimix) is a bonus but not essential. The student will gain experience in a range of techniques, including field ecology, biochemistry, marine chemical ecology and environmental toxicology.

Interested students should contact Dr. Marc Slattery (slattery at olemiss.edu<mailto:slattery at olemiss.edu>) and/or Dr. Deborah Gochfeld (gochfeld at olemiss..edu<mailto:gochfeld at olemiss.edu>), sending a CV and cover letter including statement of research experience and interests. Information on how to formally apply to the program will be provided to qualified candidates. Applicant screening will begin immediately.

About the Program: The University of Mississippi is based in Oxford, a college town known for its arts, food and athletics culture. The University was recently ranked as a Research-1 institution by the Carnegie Classification. The student would be enrolled in the Division of Environmental Toxicology or Pharmacognosy in the Department of BioMolecular Science. Based in the School of Pharmacy on the University’s main campus, students would be exposed to diverse fields and have access to state of the art research facilities within the School of Pharmacy, and to expertise and opportunities in other programs across campus.
