The CIEE Tropical Marine Ecology and Conservation Program in Bonaire is a study abroad program for upper level, undergraduate biology students. This is an 8-week integrated summer research program on Coral Reef Ecology Research resulting in 10 semester credit hours for students in the program. The Coral Reef Ecology Research Co-Instructor is part of a team of four instructors for the program. In this project-based program; students will collaboratively research important questions in the field of coral reef ecology under the direction of a co-instructor.  Each student group will have a maximum of four students. The Coral Reef Ecology course will provide the theoretical basis for the program. The combined courses, Advanced SCUBA and Marine Ecology Field Research Methods, result in students becoming certified AAUS Scientific Divers (American Academy of Underwater Sciences). The Coral Reef Ecology Research course results in 3 major learning outcomes: a research plan, a research paper and an oral presentation in a public forum. Additional learning goals include gaining collaborative research experience including involvement in peer review of other group projects.



Advanced knowledge of Coral Reef Ecology; excellent teaching and leadership skills; the ability to be an exemplary part of the team and interest in all aspects of the success of the program are distinguishing characteristics for the position. During the program the Instructor will co-teach: Coral Reef Ecology Research, Marine Ecology Research Methods and Coral Reef Ecology..



This is a part-time academic position (~30h/week) with significant responsibilities to the program's success. The academic team in Bonaire participates in CIEE activities; including the Public Lecture series, field trips, camping and other student/staff activities. This is a physically demanding position.



Qualifications
The minimum qualifications are: a MS in Biology (PhD preferred) with teaching experience; scientific diving experience or high-level dive qualifications applicable to Scientific Dive Status; research experience in marine ecology and excellent analytical skills; demonstrated ability to work as a team member; a commitment to education and research in marine ecology and conservation; an eagerness to work closely with students; and an appreciation for field-based education. Other requirements: a comprehensive dive physical (AAUS); a full set of dive gear; current certifications in First Aid, CPR, DAN Oxygen Rescue; and DAN dive insurance.



Compensation: Salary ($3500-5000 for 10 week program; commensurate with experience), accommodations and round trip air fare are provided for this position. Although temporary, success in this position may lead to a year around position in the fall of 2017.
