[Coral-List] AI identifying heat resistant reefs in Indonesia in The Guardian

Dear Listers,
Again, identifying a healthy reef is easy if you know what you are
looking at. The hard part is correcting the problem so the reef does not go
tilt. All the monitoring in the world is USELESS if the reefs keep dying.
People will become aware after the reefs are all dead. We do not need more
exotic monitoring unless it comes with a solid plan to prevent further
degradation and/or remove the stress. Think of all the local action that
could be implemented with the cash spent on exotic robots, special cameras,
awareness cruises, and more specialized monitoring. The time is ripe for
doing simple stuff that works: no anchoring, no pollution, no fishing,
wastewater gardens instead of septic, liveaboard boats that do not anchor
or discharge their sewage.....etc. Oh - and reduce carbon emissions for the
sake of everything living on the planet.
