Good morning Coral Listers!

On behalf of the EU-funded projects SponGES, MERCES and ATLAS I'd like
to share this Press Release with you, hoping you will be able to promote
this free initiative for schools that sees several Canadian institutions
also involved.

Students and teachers from the Montreal area (and beyond) are invited to
discover deep-sea corals, deep-sea sponge grounds as well as the
Mediterranean coralligenous through samples, microscope slides,
underwater videos, VR experiences and teaching plans with on-line
resources. I am copying the PR text below, while the PDF version and the
invitation card can be accessed here:

Deadline for registration is May 8th. Spread the word!

Have a nice day,

---------- Press Release text -----------------

TITLE: Schools are invited to the World Conference on Marine
Biodiversity
 (Montreal, 13-16 May)

WHAT IS THE WORLD CONFERENCE ON MARINE BIODIVERSITY?

The World Conference on Marine Biodiversity (WCMB) has become the major
focal assembly to share research outcomes, management and policy issues,
and discussions on the role of biodiversity in sustaining ocean
ecosystems. Arranged on a 3 - 4 year cycle, prior WCMB meetings
(Valencia, Spain; Aberdeen, Scotland; Qingdao, China) have each
attracted leading specialists from around the world, and catalyzed
numerous sidebar sessions on marine biodiversity issues. The 4th WCMB
will be held at the Palais des congrès de Montréal from May 13-16, 2018,
and will see Fisheries and Oceans Canada as one of the main sponsors
(http://www.wcmb2018.org/). This meeting, consisting of a conference
proper and of an exhibition, will bring together about one thousand
among scientists, practitioners, and policy makers to discuss and
advance our understanding of the importance and current state of
biodiversity in the marine environment.

HOW CAN SCHOOLS GET INVOLVED?

Thanks to the Conference's organisers, project SponGES, project MERCES
and project ATLAS have been granted six free slots of two hours each, to
welcome six classes and their teachers on the whole exhibition floor
and, in particular, to the joint stand they are having together. These
three research projects have been funded by the European Union and share
a common focus on deep-sea ecosystems of the North Atlantic. Part of the
ongoing research involves Canadian waters and Canadian researchers. For
instance, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, which will have their own stand,
are also actively contributing to two of the above mentioned projects.
Several other Canadian institutions working on ocean subjects will be
present on the exhibition floor.

WHY SHOULD TEACHERS AND STUDENTS BE INTERESTED?

By taking advantage of this invitation, students will have the chance to
visit an exhibition dedicated to the underwater natural world, will
observe real specimens under the microscope - including some from the
Canadian shelf, will try VR experiences, will see videos taken during
deep-sea research operations that have not yet been shown to the public,
and will interact with researchers on site to know more about the deep
and the shallow ocean. Besides this, the teachers accompanying each
group/class will receive a set of expandable teaching materials to
integrate their Ocean Literacy and Education work. These materials have
been designed to match the Seven Principles of Ocean Literacy, and will
do so by covering a variety topics, including some related to deep-sea
ecosystems of the Canadian shelf and slope as well.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR A FREE VISIT?

Schools and teachers interested in visiting the exhibition floor of the
World Conference on Marine Biodiversity, may contact project SponGES
sending an email to info at deepseasponges.org. Deadline for registration
is May 8th, 2018. The participation to the activities mentioned above is
free of charge.
