Greetings!

TheAssociation for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) will havetheir next Aquatic Sciences Meeting in Puerto Rico from 23 Feb – 2 Mar2019 under the topic of Planet Water:Challenges and Successes  https://aslo.org/sanjuan2019/main. I would like to invite all practitioners of in situ coral farming, land-based coral propagation, coral reefrestoration, and coral reef conservation biology, to consider presenting in SessionSS73 “The challenge of coral reefrehabilitation in the context of climate change” https://aslo.org/sanjuan2019/sessions

Coral reefshave undergone significant decline over the last decades due to a combinationof human and natural factors, including climate change. Therefore, a burst oflow-tech, in situ coral farmingstrategies, ex situ state-of the-artcoral propagation efforts, and multiple small-scale coral restorationinitiatives with variable success have emerged over the last two decades. However, reef restoration has become increasingly challenging mostly as theresult of increasing reef mediocrity and threats from climate change.

The proposedsession is aimed at addressing many of such novel challenges, including, butnot limited to: 1. The development of adaptive strategies of reefrehabilitation in the context of mediocre and novel reef ecosystems; 2. How tocope with potentially increased magnitude of hurricanes; 3. Restore wavebuffering role of shallow coastal reefs; 4. Expansion of spatial/temporalscales of restoration interventions; 5. Stabilization/restoration of hurricane-generatedmoving rubble fields; 6. How to tackle down the decline of slow-growing,massive coral functional groups; 7. How to incorporate demographic and wavemodels as decision-making tools in coral reef rehabilitation; 8. Addressconnectivity issues; 9. Increase community-based and NGO participation inrestoration efforts; 10. Systematization and sharing of lessons learned; 11.Fundraising and operational sustainability strategies, and other poorlyaddressed topics.

If you areinterested or have any question, please let me know in advance by contacting meat edwin.hernandezdelgado at gmail.com.And please, help us to spread the word, it would be nice to have an excellentand diverse group presenting in San Juan.

Importantinformation: “ASLO requires payment of registration, inclusive of abstractfees, at the time of abstract submission. The deadline is October 15, 2018. This date willbe strictly adhered to so that the committee can plan the program and schedulethe presentations. Helpful details for presenters are at https://aslo.org/sanjuan2019/submission-overview.”
