Internships available at the Coral Restoration Foundation Curaçao
We are pleased to announce an ongoing internship program at CRF Curaçao. We
aim to recruit 2-3
interns a year to work on our coral restoration efforts. The parameters are
as follows:
Duration: 4-6 months
Location: Ocean Encounters, or another participating dive center
(currently Atlantis Diving and
Scubaçao Diving Adventures).
Supervision: by the staff of the dive centers, as well as by CRFC
personnel; several interns have
already had safe and fulfilling experiences
Prerequisites: Advanced Open Water divers, preference for candidates with
a Rescue Diver or
Divemaster certification. Knowledge of coral biology and conservation
issues, strong
organizational skills, preference for individuals with college-level
training in marine biology.
Minimum 21 years old.
Stipend: USD 330 / Nafl 600 per month.
Local expenses: lodging at USD 350 / month, food/living costs at USD 300 /
month. The
internship will cover about half the local expenses.
Duties:
o Maintenance of existing coral nurseries (cleaning, fragging, maintaining
trees)
o Outplanting of corals to reefs (preparation of supports, outplanting)
o Monitoring and documentation of coral growth and health in nursery and in
outplanting
sites
o Social Media (updating Facebook, Instagram, CRFC Web site)
o Search and scout for possible donors and sponsorships
o Lead dives to the nursery with volunteers
o Applied research to optimize restoration efficiency
o Other restoration activities as needed.
Benefits: immersion in a working dive center, extensive diving experience,
possibility to obtain
divemaster certification at a discounted rate (USD 600, compared to usual
fees of USD 1500-
2000), practical experience in coral conservation and restoration,
possibility to do applied
research under professional supervision; depending on demand and intern
motivation,
possibility to earn extra money by occasionally working as a divemaster.
