Aloha,

*REMINDER: The deadline for this position is this Friday, Aug 23rd. *

The Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) is
currently recruiting a Coral Bleaching Analyst within the PIFSC Ecosystem
Sciences Division based in Honolulu, HI.

Hawai’i is very likely to experience a major bleaching event in
September-October of 2019. Leveraging the Hawai’i Coral Bleaching
Collaborative and prior bleaching studies initiated in 2015, we are
planning a multi-institution response that applies a structured,
hypothesis-driven approach to document the extent of coral bleaching and
lay the groundwork for tracking coral response and recovery. This position
will play a key role in executing monitoring surveys, lead data generation
from digital images (photoquadrats and ‘photo-mosaics’), manage the large
multi-institution dataset, and contribute to data analysis to advance our
understanding of impacts of thermal stress on coral bleaching dynamics
across the State of Hawaii.

PRIMARY DUTIES: Collates and manages large multi-partner coral bleaching
dataset (anticipated data collection Fall 2019). Manages data entry and
storage into a relational database and leads data quality control.. Applies
established methodologies to quantify the extent and severity of bleaching
(including photogrammetric ‘photo-mosaics’ methods, CoralNet, and standard
visual assessment methods) and improves or modifies methods as needed. Uses
physical and biological data to assess spatial and coral species-level
vulnerability to thermal stress in Hawaii Islands coral reef ecosystems.
Summarizes the results of these analyses into reports/manuscripts. Works
closely with partners to build strong collaborative relationships. Provides
assistance with meeting logistics, coordinating and executing field
operations using SCUBA, and administrative functions.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must have a Master's Degree from an accredited
college or university in Marine Science, Zoology, Oceanography, Biology, or
Mathematics. The successful candidate should have 1-3 years of experience
summarizing and managing large biological datasets pertaining to the
vulnerability of corals to coral bleaching and producing technical
reports/publications. Experience with Structure-from-Motion (SfM) and SfM
software (e.g., Agisoft Photoscan or Metashape), CoralNet, and relational
database software (e.g. Microsoft Access, Oracle, etc) is desired. The
scope of work will also require excellent communication and coordination
skills to effectively collaborate with partners and disseminate results.

DEADLINE: Please note the deadline to apply is Aug 23th, 2019.
