I would like to draw your attention to a three-year PhD studentship at the
University of Plymouth, UK.
*Investigating the distribution and diversity of mesophotic reefs in the
British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT)*
The British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) consists of the near-pristine
Chagos Archipelago, which is protected by a very large MPA. It is a largely
unperturbed ecosystem due to its protected status and remote location,
making it an excellent place to study reef dynamics in their natural state.
Mesophotic reefs are known to occur within the BIOT; however, knowledge of
their spatial distribution and diversity, and their role in supporting
shallow-water coral reefs across the archipelago is largely unknown. This
studentship will investigate the distribution, diversity and species
composition of mesophotic reefs, and their associated larval communities,
within the BIOT.
The supervisory team will be Dr Kerry Howell (University of Plymouth), Dr
Nicola Foster (University of Plymouth) and Dr Phil Hosegood (University of
Plymouth). With additional advisors Dr Emma Sheehan (University of
Plymouth) and Prof Martin Attrill (University of Plymouth).
Full details of the project, eligibility criteria, funding and application
process are provided on the website (link above). The deadline for
applications is 12 noon on Friday 8 February 2019.
I would be very grateful if you could circulate this opportunity to
relevant potential applicants, for example current or recent Masters
