Dear Coral-List’ers,

Please share with those who might be interested. While the location and the context of the program is in a temperate region, and not tropical, we all share similar marine conservation issues; and for this reason I thought it would be appropriate to share the news of this program here.

See below for information on an exciting experiential, undergraduate marine conservation semester in Haida Gwaii this Winter (January to April) 2020, offered by the Haida Gwaii Institute (https://hginstitute.ca) and accredited by the University of British Columbia.

This Winter 2020 (January to April), the Haida Gwaii Institute will be offering the Haida Gwaii Semester in Marine Conservation. Haida Gwaii is a remote archipelago off of Canada’s Pacific coast, and is the ancestral, traditional and unceded territory of the Haida Nation. A microcosm of the world, these islands offer an unparalleled setting for students to learn first-hand about the complex social, cultural, political, ecological and economic issues facing cross-cultural communities around the globe, converging at a local scale. The Haida Gwaii Semester in Marine Conservation is made up of five courses:

  1. Ocean People, Culture & Tradition
  2. Fisheries Co-Management of the North Pacific Coast
  3. Marine Protected Areas & Marine Spatial Planning
  4. Applications in Marine Conservation
  5. Haida Gwaii Marine Conservation Seminar
