Dear Coral Listers,

I am writing to invite college and high school students to participate in a
high impact experiential education opportunity that is available through the
College of Charleston (CofC) and the Marine Science And Nautical Training
Academy (MANTA) www.manta-online.org <http://www.manta-online.org> .

Location: British Virgin Islands

Duration: 15 days, summer

Format: Students live aboard MANTA's 80 foot research vessel that serves as
their dormitory, classroom, and diving platform.

Course Description: These are intensive programs that introduces students to
the biodiversity and taxonomy of tropical coral reef ecosystems, and trains
students in SCUBA diving and scientific techniques for surveying coral
reefs. The emphasis is placed on field methods, labs, and hands-on
experience, as students collect, analyze, and present reef survey data.
Students are also introduced to coral reef community ecology and critical
conservation and management issues for this complex and impacted ecosystem.
Each day the class sails to a new island in the archipelago to investigate
and explore new habitats, and receive practical training in the nautical
sciences that prepare them to be a competent crewmember of a research vessel
or field team. There is 2-3 hrs/day of lecture, and 4-6 hours/day of lab
activities, plus professor mediated independent learning prior to departure.
It has been one of our most popular and successful study abroad programs,
and has been broadly showcased by CofC.

Cost: $3815

Starting in summer 2020 this program will be available for advanced high
school students to enroll for college credit through CofC's dual-enrollment
program. MANTA has been teaching a high school version of this field studies
course since 2009 that was not for college credit. Nearly 100 top students
from 16 states and 37 high schools have shared in this high impact and
academically rigorous early career experience. After years of observing the
academic acumen and maturity of these advanced high school students, the
College of Charleston is thrilled to now offer 4 credit hours of college
biology credit to these students. The dual enrollment program is a
remarkable opportunity for high school students to get a head start on their
college education and transcript. Registration as a non-degree seeking CofC
student through our dual enrollment program provides a heavily reduced
tuition rate of $450 for this course. Students must complete the
dual-enrollment application and dual-enrollment permission form in the link
above. The permission form requires 1) authorization of student
participation by a school counselor, and 2) identifying the high school
course equivalency to CofC's course number that may be awarded by the high
school. Educators from marine or STEM academies and magnet schools are
particularly encouraged to reach out.
