Studying shark and reef fish ecology using ‘big data’: Ph.D. Project.

Alastair Harborne and Demian Chapman at Florida International University<https://www.fiu.edu/> (FIU) are looking for a Ph.D. student to mine the Global FinPrint (https://globalfinprint.org) dataset to examine large-scale questions of tropical shark and fish distributions, ecology, and behavior. The FinPrint data set comprises ~20,000 hours of baited remote underwater video station (BRUVS) from 58 countries. Starting in the Fall Semester 2020, this will be a jointly advised project based in FIUs Tropical Fish Ecology Lab (https://www.tropicalfishecologylab.com) and Predator Ecology and Conservation Lab (https://www.peclabfiu.com). We are looking for a student with strong quantitative skills (experience of Bayesian statistics and GIS an advantage), and a primary interest in using very large datasets to answer key questions in coral reef fish ecology and conservation. Marine biology experience not essential. Note that new fieldwork is likely to be minimal during this project, with a primary focus on video and data analyses. The successful applicant will need to secure a Teaching Assistantship at FIU. Please send resume and cover letter to dchapman at fiu.edu<mailto:dchapman at fiu.edu> and aharborn at fiu.edu<mailto:aharborn at fiu.edu>. Review of applications will begin in early October. Deadline to apply for a FIU Teaching Assistantship is Jan 2020.
