MANTA - Marine Science And Nautical Training Academy is hiring a Dive Safety
Officer and Lead Scuba Instructor for our 2020 cruises in the Virgin
Islands.  

Job Description: MANTA is a 501(c)3 organization based in Charleston, SC
with programs operating in the Caribbean. This is a full-time temporary
position with the potential to convert to a permanent position. MANTA
conducts study abroad coral reef field studies programs in partnership with
the College of Charleston. It is a 15 day live-aboard course conducted
aboard the Research Vessel MANTA, an 80' motoryacht equipped for scuba
diving, teaching, research, and long-range cruising. The course immerses
students in lectures, labs, and field experiments to introduce coral reef
taxonomy, biology, conservation. This includes instruction, certification,
and supervision in SCUBA diving. The candidate will be the Dive Safety
Officer and lead scuba instructor, working in a team of 4 crew. The position
will start in Charleston, SC and focus on vessel setup. The candidate will
then accompany R/V MANTA and her crew on the delivery to the Virgin Islands
where work will be conducted for 3 months. This is a very physically and

Instructor responsibilities include:

1) Lead role in completing setup of R/V MANTA for live-aboard diving
activities 

2) Teaching, certifying, and supervising student divers in safe recreational
and scientific diving techniques 

3) Coordinating scuba activities and professional dive team members with
vessel operations

4) Maintenance and operation of scuba compressor

5) Maintenance and inspection of scuba gear

6) Develop and oversee AAUS program and associated scientific dive training
program

7) Serve in a dual role as deckhand and small boat operator

8) Assist with all aspect of program logistics, including operation and
maintenance of the vessel, and program related activities

9) Assist in teaching marine science through lectures, labs, and hands-on
research and discovery

10) Ensure the safety and appropriate conduct of students at all times

11) Creating a positive, encouraging, and inspirational environment in which
to learn and live

 

Qualifications:

The most highly qualified applicants will also have a strong background in
marine science and coral reefs, as well as practical maritime experience in
addition to scuba diving credentials.

*	PADI MSDT, EFR Trainer, Oxygen Provider
*	Proficiency with scuba compressor and gear operation and maintenance
*	Experience working on live-aboard dive boat
*	Prior AAUS certification and scientific diving experience
*	Degree in marine science or related field (graduate degree
preferred)
*	Strong nautical background including sailing and piloting yachts and
small boats. (U.S. Coast Guard Captain's License or other merchant mariner
credentials preferred)
*	Proficient in field identification of Caribbean reef fishes and
invertebrates
*	Proficient in data collection and analysis, and experimental design
*	Prior experience teaching and working with high school and/or
college students
*	Exceptional organization and interpersonal skills
*	Positive attitude, commitment to education and research, and good
physical stamina and strength

Duration/Location:  Present to July 31, 2020. This is a full-time temporary
position with the potential for a permanent position. The position will
begin in Charleston, SC at first availability, followed by 3 months in the
Virgin Islands. Permanent position will be a combination of time in the
Virgin Islands and other Caribbean locales, and Charleston. 

Compensation:   Commensurate upon experience. Accommodations on the vessel
are included, and meals are provided while underway.
