[Coral-List] Caribbean needs big MPAs

Interesting that the first data paper they cite (Queiroz et al., Nature
572, 461 (2019) says the exact opposite they say it does. The paper by
Queiroz makes the case that reserves within national jurisdictions (which
are what the authors are proposing here and comprise 100% of large MPAs in
existence) DO NOT properly protect highly migratory sharks. From Queiroz et
al (2019):

"We conclude that pelagic sharks have limited spatial refuge from current
levels of fishing effort in marine areas beyond national jurisdictions (the
high seas). Our results demonstrate an urgent need for conservation and
management measures at high-seas hotspots of shark space use, and highlight
the potential of simultaneous satellite surveillance of megafauna and
fishers as a tool for near-real-time, dynamic management."

The greenwashing is strong on this one.

Cheers,

Luiz
