The Coral Health & Disease Program (CHAD) at Mote Marine Laboratory &
Aquarium (Sarasota, FL campus) is seeking a motivated intern to assist with
a broad spectrum of research activities covering dry lab, wet lab, and data
input/analysis. Opportunities for field work will be minimal. We are
looking for an intern that is able to start at the beginning of April 2020
(or sooner).

The Coral Health & Disease Program focuses on the susceptibility and
resilience of corals to major stressors such as climate change, ocean
acidification, and disease. Coral disease is one of the greatest threats to
reefs around the world, causing catastrophic losses when outbreaks occur.
Currently, the CHAD program is addressing an ongoing disease outbreak in
the Florida Keys, which is causing what is now known as one of the longest
and largest infectious coral disease outbreaks in recent history. As such,
a number of research projects are underway for better understanding the
cause(s) and consequences of this outbreak, as well as for developing
remedies.

Research may include conducting wetlab exposure experiments, laboratory
assays and molecular research, and computer-based data retrieval and
analyses. Daily duties will include care and maintenance of wetlab space,
coral husbandry, and participation in currently funded research projects.
Interns will have the opportunity to become familiar with command-driven
computer programs such as R and develop basic biological statistics skills.

*Internship Details*

college program at the undergraduate or graduate level OR be a recent
college graduate to be eligible to apply for a Mote internship. Students
must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

*International Applicants *| We do accept international interns who speak
English fluently. We are unable to assist international applicants in the
process of obtaining a visa but will be happy to supply accepted interns with
a letter on Mote letterhead stating that they have been accepted to the
program.

*Financial Support* | Because of the need for an intern to start within the
next month or so we are able to offer a $1000 stipend to offset living
expenses.

*Start Date & Duration* | We are looking for an intern to start at the
beginning of April 2020 (or sooner). We ask for a minimum 12-week
commitment; extended internships are possible with approval from relevant
supervisor(s).

*Location and transportation* | This internship will be carried out at
Mote’s main campus in Sarasota, Florida. Intern will be expected to have
own means of transportation to and from the campus. Public transportation
between Mote and most local areas is available through the Sarasota County
Area Transit bus system. Also, sarasota.craigslist.org is a great resource
for finding bicycles for sale.

*Work Hours* | Typically Mon-Fri, 9am – 5pm. Weekend and evening work will
be required at times.

*Housing* | Mote is unable to provide or arrange for intern housing.
However, once candidates have accepted an internship offer, Mote is able to
offer a small list of housing options and can also put interns in
communication with one another so that they may arrange for shared housing.
We recommend that interns budget at least $500/month for housing.
