Dear friends of the Octocorals,

The upcoming 14th International Coral Reef Symposium 2020 in Bremen (ICRS2020) will bring together a large community of coral reef researchers, managers and friends interested in Octocorals. As yet, 37 (!) colleagues have submitted contributions about the taxon to the symposium.

The symposium program contains one SESSION (# 11C) about Shifts in scleractinian dominated reefs - are we facing new winners - octocorals, sponges and macroalgae? (compare https://www.icrs2020.de/program/session-program/#c243). Further, there will be a WORKSHOP entitled: What alterations, new roles and perspectives can we foresee for Octocorals under climate change conditions? This means there are considerable space and time for presentations and discussions about Octocorals.

The Point:

However, this extended assemblage of Octocoral researchers offers the opportunity for a more in depth workshop, perhaps entitled like: The transition from classic morpho-taxonomy to molecular systematics, MOTUs and species concepts ? examples and discussions in octocorals (i.e. a working title, other options possible).

This E-mail is to explore your possible interest and possible support for such a satellite workshop to be held back to back after the ISRS-Symposium in Bremen: Beginning after the symposium closure on Friday July 10 for three days, and closing on Monday July 13th. The Bremen OverseasMuseum (UeberseeMuseum) in the city center (https://www.uebersee-museum.de/) would host this workshop, so you will be just there.

The Subject(s):

About 20 researchers and scholars interested might meet in an informal working mood and (lab) environment to exchange experiences, discuss examples / problems, cross check sample materials... Depending on the participants, material and funds available, focus subjects (like e.g. deep-sea octocorals, certain taxa and ID, invasive species) could be identified and prepared for in selected subject lectures and brief topic presentations. Young octocoral scholars might find an opportunity of training and networking - yet the program is open for your expressions of interest, we will try to adjust!

The Costs:

Costs would require your three additional overnight stays in Bremen and a fee to cover some additional expenditure and catering during the workshop. Some funds will be available from the cooperating co-host, the Deutsches Meeresmuseum (German Oceanographic Museum) in Stralsund, FRG. Graduate scholars might request an invitation letter or related documents to apply for respective funding.

Equipment like binoculars, lights, microscope/s, monitors and beamer will be available.

Your Feedback:

- Would you be present at the conference in Bremen and interested in such a workshop opportunity?

- What would be your focus interest in such a practical workshop meeting?

- Pls. suggest your favorite subjects to be included in the program: ?

- Would you be available as a lecturer to cover certain training aspects of such a meeting?

Please return your feedback by January 22, 2020. We will evaluate your resonance and keep you updated. And, please forward this information to other colleagues possibly interested and planning to participate in the Bremen ICRS2020 conference.

Hope to see you there!

With all the best wishes for a spirited start into the New Year 2020.

Goetz Reinicke (Stralsund) & Michelle Taylor (University of Essex)
