FACULTY POSITION, DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY, NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE
ASSISTANT (TENURE TRACK)/TENURED ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR
TROPICAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

We wish to appoint, up to the level of full Professor, a leader in research on Tropical Environmental
Change with specific interests in one or more of the following three areas:
(1) disturbance dynamics
(2) macroecology & biodiversity conservation
(3) water resources
The candidate should also have geospatial analysis or environmental modeling expertise.

The position will sit within the Department's 'Tropical Environmental Change' (TEC) research group. The
broad focus of TEC is on the temporal and spatial interactions of climate, water and landscapes at low
latitudes, with emphasis on the Asia-Pacific Region. This focus takes advantage of our physical location in
Asia and recognizes the many contributions that physical geographers routinely make in improving
understanding of tropical environmental processes and their importance to global change, as well as the
physiographic consequences of rapid development, land-cover transformation, and climate variability.

The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore stands among the top Geography
departments in the world and offers Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees. Although there are many
overreaching and interconnecting projects and themes, our research and teaching are constituted
through three groups: the aforementioned TEC; Politics, Economies and Space; and Social and Cultural
Geographies.

The Department comprises an international mix of about 35 faculty members and has over 300
undergraduate majors and 70 graduate students, the majority of whom are PhD students. Faculty in the
Department continue to develop and shape research agendas in the global academic arena, while
maintaining a strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate education. Recent initiatives include a
taught MSc in Applied GIS and a new lab for geochemical analyses. For additional information, please
consult the Department web site at: http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/geog/.

Applicants should have a PhD in geography or an allied field with demonstrable expertise in researching
and understanding complex environmental problems that affect society today. They should have a record
of excellence in research, evidenced by high-impact publications and substantial grant capture, as is
expected for one of the top universities in the world. Outstanding teaching abilities are also desired.
Successful candidates will have a record of collaborative research, and will be able to leverage synergies
within the Department of Geography.

In terms of teaching and academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to:
a. Contribute to the Department's internationally recognized research activities;
b. Teach a minimum of two modules a year at the undergraduate and/or graduate level and supervise
graduate students;
c. Perform administrative/service duties commensurate with a tenured, senior appointment.

The successful candidate will ideally start work at NUS from July 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Interested candidates should submit an application comprising: a letter of interest with details of
research credentials, plans for the next 3-5 years, discussion of the significance of the best published
works (at most 5) and citation index analysis (e.g. Web of Science); a full curriculum vitae (10 pages
max.); evidence of teaching experience, including feedback if available; and the names and contact
details of four referees. Evaluation of applications will commence on 1st February 2020 and will
continue until a suitable candidate is found. Shortlisted candidates will be notified soon thereafter and
plans will then be made for a campus visit and interview. A competitive remuneration package, including
medical benefits, a period of subsidized housing, and relocation expenses (where applicable), will be
offered to the successful candidate.

For full consideration, please submit a complete application. We regret that only shortlisted candidates
will be notified.
