Onderwerp: Join a global collaborative study on tourists impacts on coral reef!

Dear corallist,

As the COVID-19 crisis has affected tourist influxes globally, we are using these opportunistic times to set up an international collaborative research project aimed at studying the impacts of tourists on tropical coastal habitats.

Many coastal areas are experiencing much less tourism pressures at the moment. As tourist numbers are increasing in some places again, we can expect to see increasing disturbances reflected in biological, physical and chemical parameters of our coastal habitats. As such, we are setting up a platform for researchers around the world to team up on studying these impacts. Studying these changes in different countries could help us better understand the carrying capacity of tropical coastal habitats, as well as the variations between countries.

Are you interested in studying this topic? or have you already started? and would you be interested in collaborating with other researchers around the world? During Global Coral Reef Week we started this collaboration to align our data collection methods and to apply for research grants to enable monitoring of certain parameters that strongly indicate tourist effects for all research partners involved.
