Position description: Dr. Simon Brandl’s Lab (Fish & Functions, www.brandllab.com <http://www.brandllab.com/>, January 2021) at the University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute (UTMSI <https://utmsi.utexas.edu/>, Port Aransas, TX 78373) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in coral reef ecology or fish ecology and evolution. The successful candidate will design and execute an independent research project under the supervision of Dr. Brandl, broadly related to the lab’s current research themes, and collaborate on several of the lab’s ongoing research projects

Research context: Research in the Brandl Lab revolves around the links between organisms, communities, and ecosystem functioning. We focus on coral reef ecosystems and the roles of fishes, with a specific emphasis on small, bottom-dwelling (‘cryptobenthic’) reef fishes. For more information, please take a look at our research themes <http://www.brandllab.com/research> (www.brandllab.com/research <http://www.brandllab.com/research>) and previous papers <http://brandllab.com/publications> (www.brandllab.com/publications <http://www.brandllab.com/publications>). Incorporation of advanced techniques from fields such as physiology, molecular biology, biotelemetry, mass spectrometry, ecological modeling, or applied ecology are encouraged.

Requirements:

	2) A demonstrated ability to plan, execute, communicate, and publish independent research

	3) Solid quantitative training and proficiency with R or related programming languages

	4) Commitment to contribute positively to the academic community in the lab and at UTMSI, including a willingness to engage in student mentoring and collaborative research

Beneficial qualifications:

	1) Experience in one or more of the following fields: physiology, paleoecology, molecular biology, ecomorphology, biotelemetry, or isotopic ecology.

	2) Experience in leading marine field operations to remote coral reef locations, including SCUBA-diving and small boat operation, and/or experience running aquarium experiments.

Research environment: You will be based in Dr. Simon Brandl’s Fish & Functions Lab at UTMSI in Port Aransas (~3.5 hours from main campus in Austin). There is no a priori expectation with regards to the location of your research.

Appointment & application: Initial appointment is for 2 years, renewable for up to 3 years based on performance and funding. You will receive a competitive stipend (according to UT salary guidelines) and access to research funds as required. The start date is flexible (as early as January 16th 2021). Candidates from demographic groups that are currently underrepresented in STEM due to historic and ongoing societal inequalities will receive prime consideration for the advertised position.

	2) Your current CV.

	3) A description of an independent research project you would like to undertake during your fellowship, feasible with $30,000 of research funding and two years of support (2 pages max).

	4) A description of your career goals, as well as skills or experiences you wish to acquire during your postdoc, and your previous/planned contributions to increasing diversity in STEM (1 page max).

	5) Names and contact information for two academic references.
