Dear Corallist,

Virtual conferences are buzzying since COVID-19 started and most of us attended at least one this year. But what about organizing such an event? In our new peer-reviewed paper, Shifting away from the business-as-usual approach to research conferences published in Biology open, we give insights on how we put together Global Coral Reef Week (www.coralreefweek.org) from scratch. Last July, our small team managed to put together a free virtual conference with over 150 speakers and 2700 participants, despite having no previous experience in virtual conferences. In the publication, we show how global inclusive events are possible even with a small budget of $1500. We hope that you enjoy learning from our experience and that this publication helps you to organize a successful virtual event of your own. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions at globalcoralreefweek at posteo.net.
