Dear Francesca,
I invite you to read the work of Dr Iliana Baums, Dr Misha Matz and many
others who have done considerably research for over10 years on the genetics
aspects of coral reef restoration. One of the first paper on the subject
was published in 2008: Baums IB (2008) A restoration genetics guide for
coral reef conservation. Mol Ecol 17:2796–2811 .
There is even a newer publication that includes principles and suggestions
to ensure genetic diversity is included within coral reef restoration
projects: Baums IB, Baker AC, Davies SW, Grottoli AG, Kenkel CD, Kitchen
SA, Kuffner IB, LaJeunesse TC, Matz M V., Miller MW, Parkinson JE, Shantz
AA (2019) Considerations for maximizing the adaptive potential of restored
coral populations in the western Atlantic. Ecol Appl 29:1–23 .

The Coral Restoration Consortium (CRC) also has a working group on
Restoration Genetics. One of the new CRC priorities is to develop guidance
to ensure restoration of threatened coral species takes place within a
comprehensive population genetics management context.

Those who are doing science-based coral reef restoration understand the
discipline is not in itself the solution to the coral reef crisis. But it
can and must complement current traditional conservation strategies.
Moreover, there is growing evidence that it can, when done following
principles of restoration ecology, assist in the natural recovery of
genetically diverse and reproductively viable coral reefs.
