Graduate Student (Ph.D.) position available at Dr. Jose Eirin-Lopez's Environmental Epigenetics Lab, Institute of Environment, Florida International University

The EELab (environmentalepigenetics.com<http://environmentalepigenetics.com/>) is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, and independent student interested in developing a Ph.D. project to investigate basic and applied aspects of the links between global change and phenotypic responses in marine ecosystems. Competitive candidates must have an M.S. degree in Marine Biology or a related discipline (academic training in genetics, ecology, statistics, and evolution), be proficient in English (both spoken and written), and have a strong background in bioinformatics and R. The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team both in the lab and in the field is paramount for this position.

Interested students will be required to apply to the Graduate Program in the Dept. of Biological Sciences at FIU (http://biology.fiu.edu/graduate/). The tentative start date for this position is Fall 2021 (flexible).

While research topic/s and models will be defined in consensus with the successful candidate, the Ph.D. project will be primarily focused on the study of the epigenetic mechanisms underlying phenotypic responses in marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs. This position will be funded by an NSF Research Assistantship (24 months) and complemented by a Teaching Assistantship (24 months), although additional NSF RA funding may be possible as additional funding application decisions come through.

For more information about the research, outreach, and educational initiatives at the EELab please check our website (environmentalepigenetics.com<http://environmentalepigenetics.com/>).

In order to be considered, qualified candidates must submit a statement of interest, curriculum vitae, unofficial transcripts (GPA scores), GRE scores, TOEFL scores (if applicable) and a summary of research interests in a single PDF file to Dr. Eirin-Lopez (jeirinlo at fiu.edu). Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

Successful candidates will be based at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) in North Miami, home to the Marine Science Program (marine.fiu.edu<http://marine.fiu.edu>). With unique access to diverse coastal ecosystems in South Florida and the Caribbean, this Program strives for excellence in research, teaching, and public outreach. Such a privileged location offers unique access to state of the art molecular, bioinformatics, and marine biology resources, including a well-developed American Advancement for Underwater Science (AAUS) certified dive program and several research vessels and boating facilities.

Florida International University (fiu.edu<http://fiu.edu>) is Carnegie-designated as “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”. FIU has 11 separate colleges and more than 40 centers, facilities, labs, and institutes that offer more than 190 programs of study, including professional school programs. Located in the heart of the dynamic south Florida urban region, our multiple campuses serve more than 50,000 students, placing FIU among the ten largest universities in the nation. FIU is a member of the State University System of Florida and is an Equal Opportunity, Equal Access Affirmative Action Employer.
