TITLE:  Research Technician
REPORTS TO:  Director of Research

SUMMARY:

The Research Technician will help execute and maintain all field and lab work related to our Coral Restoration Program, Healthy Reefs Initiative, and Long-term Reef Monitoring Program, at the Little Cayman Research Center. Workload is distributed among field and laboratory-based activities including field installations, maintaining the coral nursery, conducting field surveys, compiling and entering data, data analysis and management, and reporting results. The technician supports the Director of Research and will work as an essential part of the research team and help the with general operations of a remote field station by assisting with the maintenance of the research laboratories. Other work required for successful execution of research may be required as requested by the Director of Research.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Manage the CCMI Coral Restoration Project and Nursery

Maintain coral nurseries and restoration experiments including building and repairing field structures and procuring needed materials
Ensure the nursery is organized and tidy with digital maps to guide visiting researchers
Keep photographic records of nursery maintenance and organization
Collect and download environmental data, including hobo temperature data
Collect, input, and analyze nursery observational data (growth & survival)
Assist with any and all experiments related to the Coral Restoration Program, including those led by visiting/collaborative researchers


Healthy Reefs Initiative and Long-Term Monitoring

Manage annual AGRRA coral reef health surveys
Assist with training CCMI staff in species ID, assuring quality control
Lead all in-water surveys
Enter data and maintain the entire database
Analyze long-term monitoring data and prepare publishable results
Complete the annual Healthy Reef Report
Assist with maintaining the CREWS buoy (Coral Reefs Early Warning System) by helping the Research Manager to conduct fortnightly maintenance, and assisting with calibrations.
Photograph activities to be provided to the CCMI outreach team


Lab and Data Management

Manage CCMI data and databases for Restoration, HRI, and AGRRA.
Catalog historical research permits, scientific publications and presentations.
Assist with maintaining laboratories, equipment and supplies, inventories.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or a related field, MS preferred
2-4 years postgraduate experience working in coral reef restoration or a related field
Strong data management and analysis skills, preferably using R
Must be an experienced certified SCUBA diver, minimum rescue diver with 60+ dives.
Strong experience with coral reef ecological research, experimental design, and reef surveys
Expert in Caribbean coral and fish identification
Experience maintaining and calibrating instruments
Experience handling small boats, captains license preferred
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to move, live, and work in a remote location (Little Cayman)
Ability to work autonomously
Strong leadership and organizational skills with great attention to detail
Willing to work odd and sometimes long hours when needed to complete research
Positive can-do attitude, commitment to education and research, and good physical stamina and strength
