[Coral-List] A Very Useful Report (Douglas Fenner)

I completely agree on applying all possible pressure to stop damage to the
environment, no matter who causes it. I know of no source that lists
the many threats to coral reefs, that even puts military on the list, let
alone as one of the more major threats. If anybody knows of such a list,
please let me and coral-list know.
My reading of press stories yesterday indicated that this incident in
Hawaii was a leak of an old underground storage system for fuel for the
military. There is an underground leak somewhere in that system, and it
got into a nearby well that supplies about 20% of the water supply. It was
not deliberate dumping. Many of the worst affected were military
families. The military leaders are clearly not at all happy with this,
this is really bad press and worst for the leaders is that it hurts the
military, and they appear determined to get this fixed. News said they are
providing clean water and 700 military families have been put up in
hotels. No military in their right mind would deliberately hurt their own
soldiers and families.
Surely the underground water in a place like this slowly moves to the
ocean. When it gets there, then it could possibly damage reefs, though it
might be diluted to the place it wouldn't, that I don't know.
       Cheers, Doug
