Dear Coral-listers-

We are pleased to share with you our recently published article
“Transitioning to co-management in Caribbean reef fisheries: Tela Bay case
study”.

We analyzed the 5-year transition process of a Caribbean reef fishery from
top-down management to co-management. Despite previous research stating
that the Caribbean in general, and Honduras in particular, are not ready
for collaborative management approaches we saw that the Tela Bay was able
to successfully implement a co-management system. Furthermore, we evaluated
the opportunities and challenges faced by the Tela Bay in this transition
to provide information for other Caribbean fisheries looking to transition
towards collaborative, community-based management arrangements. According
to our results, bridging organizations (such as Interinstitutional
environmental committees) and strong interpersonal relationships among all
the stakeholders are key for a successful transition.
