Dear Coral-Listers,
I would like to encourage everyone to read a recent note from COP26. The link can be found here (https://davidobura.medium.com). It just takes a minute to read David Obura’s message, but it is one that everyone who is concerned about the future of the world’s coral reefs should seriously contemplate especially in light of what seems to be (at least to me) the prevailing message emanating from the coral science community today - that being that we are working to save coral reefs through selective and innovative restoration techniques. His is not a call to abandon coral restoration, but it does seem to put its advocacy in its place. Here is the question I would put to you. Does the coral science community have a responsibility to clearly point out what the prospects are for coral reefs and coral restoration projects IF we don’t act now to limit global warming to 1.5 C ? And what about those same prospects under a 2-3 degree C warming scenario? As David said, if we save coral reefs, we save everything. Are we really doing everything we can to get that message out?
Regards,
Steve Mussman
