both approaches are valid: focus on strong biology programs and focus on specific colleges

What is important is for your son to better define his interests in marine biology. There are many ways to study the oceans and to focus the work, from at-sea work, to laboratory work, and everything in between.

Since your son is still a junior in high school, there is still time to try out what type of marine biology he wants to do. So, before deciding on colleges, and since you are based in Florida, I assume your son has already contact with the ocean, What does he like specifically?

Then, there are opportunities for internships or for volunteering with ocean-focused organizations. Try out some of the work done with those organizations, then, with a better idea of what the wants to focus on, look for the best colleges to match his interests.

This is all the advice I can give you for now, based on your request.

Subject: [Coral-List] Advice for a HS student interested in marine biology

Hello everybody!

My son is a high school junior who has said he is interested in marine biology (like many others!). He has been randomly looking at what colleges have to offer and focusing on ones that have marine biology programs. My personal view is he should focus on colleges with good biology programs that can give him the base to then focus on a specialty like marine biology, but I can see the benefit of being at a college with both.

We live in Florida and I know there are some good programs in state. What do you recommend regarding (1) focusing initially on colleges with good biology programs, which would open up a larger number of colleges for consideration, and (2) specific colleges.

Thank you!
Tim
