U.S. mulls stronger protections for iconic Caribbean conch, raising
concerns among fishers

They are large snails that inhabit seagrass beds, not really reefs.  I
remember huge piles of their shells in some places.  I believe it is
pronounced "konk" but correct me if I'm wrong.  They are being considered
for listing as "threatened" under the US Endangered Species Act.  Nice
picture.  They are quite visual, they can stick their eyes on long eye
stalks out from under the shell in what is called the "Strombid notch" to
look around.
