Thanks much for your detailed remarks and ideas, and to Alina for her
observations of change in the Caribbean.

One of the reasons I started thinking about developing a global coral reef
dashboard relates to the questions raised by Doug – How can we know how the
world’s coral reefs are doing. Also, how can we know what is true – given
the reports in the news, studies in journals, and the periodic GCRMN
report.  I agree with Doug that we have not gotten to the bottom of it, and
I don’t think we have even come up with a good way of accumulating
knowledge and retaining what we already “know”.  For instance, GCRMN has
done an excellent series of regional reports, but it seems that not all the
survey data from those reports have made it into the 2020 global report. I
know that access to coral reef survey data is a sensitive issue – as these
are data that people have worked hard to develop. But, I feel we do need to
find a better way of having some sort of repository of historic
observations which can be built upon.

GCRMN’s global report was less doom and gloom than I had expected, though a
14% decline on live hard coral cover is not good news. On the global coral
profile and 10 regional dashboards we did our best to integrate the GCRMN
findings with data from other sources – on warming, acidification,
sedimentation, overfishing, as well as with data on protection and coral
use and values.

It seems when I sent out the message about the dashboards last week, my
timing was terrible – there were some problems on the platform, which have
since been fixed. (And my links were a paragraph long!)
