Drs. Lauren Nadler and Tyler Cyronak from Nova Southeastern University (NSU)
are leading a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Advanced Studies
Institute (ASI) to explore the coral reefs of Australia, through the NSF
International Research Experiences for Students Track II program. The course
will take place in Northeastern Queensland, one of the only places in the
world where the rainforest meets the reef. Students will explore various
disciplines related to coral reef science with the goal to provide future
coral reef scientists with the transdisciplinary perspective necessary to
study, preserve, and restore coral reef ecosystems in a changing world.

To participate, you must be a US-based graduate student (MS or PhD
candidate) studying subjects related to coral reef science. During the
course, we will visit two iconic field stations, the School for Field
Studies Centre for Rainforest Studies and the Australia Museum's Lizard
Island Research Station. Students will explore how the land and sea are
connected through lectures, class work, field immersions, and independent
projects. Note that Australia is currently requiring proof of covid-19
vaccination for entry, so proof of vaccination will be required for
participation.

The first ASI course will be offered during the summer of 2022 (May to
August), with the 3-week field experience occurring from May to June.
Students will be engaged in lectures both before and after the field portion
of the course related to coral reef science, science communication, science
writing, statistical analysis, and data interpretation and visualization.
All travel related expenses are covered by the grant; however, the course
will be offered as two separate 3-credit electives (6 credits total) through
NSU and tuition is not included. Applications for the course will be
accepted through March 7, 2022 and include:

1.	Graduate transcript(s).
2.	CV summarizing education, employment experience, relevant
professional achievements (e.g. publications, awards, grants), and evidence
of service/leadership.
3.	Professional Statement (1-page statement on how the ASI will advance
your professional goals).
4.	Diversity Statement (1-page statement on your experiences with and
commitment to promoting diversity in coral reef science).
5.	Contact details for two professional referees (your graduate
supervisor plus one additional professional mentor of your choosing, such as
a professor from one of your completed classes or a supervisor from a job).

Applications will be screened through a competitive process and a short-list
of candidates will be selected for interviews. Invitations for inclusion in
the course will be made by March 28, 2022. Visit www.ires-au.com
