Dear Coral-listers,
We are delighted to share our new article “Coral reef benthic community
changes in the Anthropocene: Biogeographic heterogeneity, overlooked
configurations, and methodology” recently published in Global Change
Biology.https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/gcb.16034In this
article, we performed a systematic review of the coral reef benthic changes
reported to date. We then complemented this review with a meta-analysis
using ReefCheck benthic data in order to explore biogeographic and
latitudinal trends. We found that opposite to the main literature focus on
algae-dominated reefs, in some of the largest and most biodiverse
biogeographic regions, soft-coral dominated communities are the most
abundant non-hard coral community. Finally, we also reviewed and discuss
advantages and potential biases associated with the different monitoring
methods currently employed for assessing coral reef benthic changes.
