The journal ‘Symbiosis’ just published a tribute to Robert K. Trench, a
Belizean who was a pioneer in the research of coral symbioses. Bob was a
respected scholar and mentor who was educated at UWI, UCLA and Oxford. His
work encouraged several disciplines of symbiosis research, especially on
the algal symbionts critical to coral health and growth; forming mutualisms
ultimately responsible for the very existence of coral reef ecosystems.

LaJeunesse, T.C., Banaszak, A.T., Fisher, C.R. *et al.* Robert Kent Trench
(1940–2021): a life devoted to symbiotic mutualisms and seeking nature’s
truth. *Symbiosis* *85, *393–400 (2021).
