Dear Coral-listers,

Do you work on marginal or extreme reefs? If so, pleaseconsider submitting an abstract to the Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium 2023(19th – 23rd June) session ‘Coral reef communitiesat the edge of environmental limits’ with the theme ‘Marginal reefenvironments’.

Session info

The worldwide decline of coral reefs has renewed interest incoral communities at the edge of environmental limits because they have thepotential to serve as resilience hotspots and climate change refugia. These coralcommunities are often referred to as marginal or extreme reefs and historicallywere perceived to be the “poorcousins” of ''normal'' reefs. Yet many of these reefs are characterised by highcoral cover, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and may therefore, providecritical insights into how coral reefs might function in future oceanconditions. Despite the potential management and conservation value of marginaland extreme reefs, these reefs remain comparatively understudied. This themeaims to bring together researchers in the Asia Pacific region working onmarginal and/or extreme reefs (e.g. high latitude reefs, turbid and mesophoticreefs, high-temperature reefs, high CO2 seep reefs) in an effort tohighlight new research and form new collaborations that exchange data andknowledge, and identify important knowledge gaps. In doing so, improve ourunderstanding of these potentially critical reef systems and more broadlyfacilitate management of all reefs globally.

Abstract deadline is November 30th.

Much thanks

Nicola
