JobSummary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College
of Social Sciences, Social Science Research Institute (SSRI). Primary
work location will be at the Arizona State University Ridge to Reef
Restoration Center (3RC) in Kailua-Kona, Hawai¿i, and designated
worksites on Hawai¿i Island. Continuation of employment is dependent
upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance,
availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State
laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,166/Mon.

DUTIES:  Responsible for daily coral husbandry to support aquatic life
at the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of
Aquatic Resources (DAR) West Hawaii Restoration Program coral nursery,
located at 3RC. Ensures adherence to State and Federal standards.
Develops and refines protocols. Ensures day-to-day maintenance,
repairs, and minor fabrications are completed with appropriate urgency
to ensure health and survivorship of marine life. This includes, but
not limited to, an indoor lab and nursery facilities (e.g.,
fragmentation and grow-out areas, seawater supplies, source cultures),
outdoor microcosm pools and raceways, and field restoration sites.
Plans and executes coral restoration projects, such as setting goals
and ensures deliverables are met. Manages data to ensure accuracy and
efficiency. Writes, reviews, and edits reports and other documents
related to coral nursery operations and projects. Contributes to and
coordinates project permitting and compliance requirements, work
plans, and funding applications, deliverables, and reporting. Directs,
oversees, and assigns work to project staff. Provides leadership and
guidance, leads meetings to coordinate activities, discuss problems
and identify solutions to achieve defined targets. Oversees, trains,
and supports staff and establishes and monitors their work schedules.
Reviews timesheets and vacation leave for staff. Directs and
participates in underwater fieldwork, which includes site surveys,
coral translocation and reattachment, collection, outplanting, and
monitoring using scientific survey techniques. Schedules, plans, and
conducts in-situ coral nursery operations, including coral
stabilization and monitoring. Drives to field sites. Ensures safety
protocols are up-to-date and adhered to during in water operations and
in the coral nursery facility. Ensures all coral nursery staff have
proper and up-to-date certifications. Maintains program records and
ensures program compliance with internal policies and external
requirements, including ensuring all activities are conducted under
appropriate biological research and collection permits. Ensures
equipment is properly maintained. Trailers, launches, recovers, and
operates small vessels in near coastal and inshore Hawaiian waters.
Performs basic maintenance and/or schedules mechanical repairs and
maintenance for all underwater survey equipment, boats, vehicles, etc.
and performs other duties as assigned.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college
or university in Marine Biology, Aquarium Biology, Aquaculture, Coral
Conservation, or related field.
EXPERIENCE: Five to seven (5-7) years of work experience culturing
live, stony coral that involves maintaining saltwater chemical
balances in large aquaria systems and maintaining large open and
closed saltwater systems. Experience must include two to four (2-4)
years of coral reef field work experience, which includes handling
corals in-situ, recreational or scientific research diving, working
from small research vessels, and reporting. At least one (1) year of
work experience supervising or leading teams.
KNOWLEDGE: Considerable working knowledge of standard and evolving
principles, practices and techniques in the field of aquarium systems
and coral restoration/aquaculture. Knowledge of management principles
including, but not limited to, supervising/developing employees, EEO,
workplace safety, and administration of policies and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of coral biology/aquarium systems/aquaculture
foundations and methods, materials, procedures and techniques used in
land-based coral nursery operations as it applies to field coral
restoration. Thorough knowledge of in-situ coral reattachment and
translocation methods. Strong knowledge of applicable Federal/State
laws, policies and procedures.
ABILITIES & SKILLS: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient with standard laboratory culturing and tissue handling
techniques as applied to corals. Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
Proficient in using dissecting and compound microscopes, various size
Mettler balances, coral fragmentation and coral culturing gear.
Ability to establish work standards/expectations and clear direction
to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for direct reports.
Ability to provide guidance, motivate, and engage team members through
effective communication and leadership. Ability to assign work and to
establish work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of
work. Must be SCUBA certified up to Open Water Diver (NAUI, PADI,
etc.) to meet the standards established by DAR’s diver certification
process (which meets the standards set by the Occupational Safety &
Health Administration) and hold the current certifications in CPR,
First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration and maintain throughout
duration of employment. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if
use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid
personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s
Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment, to
drive to field sites. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able
to obtain boat operator certification within two (2) months from date
of hire and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must
complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after
hire or no later than the employee's initial exposure to hazardous
chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Must be capable of handling all necessary
diving equipment and procedures required in conducting underwater
research from shore or small boats, sometimes in rough seas. Must be
able to qualify as a DAR Scientific Diver and maintain throughout the
duration of employment. Must be able to swim, snorkel, and SCUBA to
collect, outplant, and stabilize coral colonies. Must be able to lift
and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Must be able to work
outdoors, around seawater, and in contact with marine organisms.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee
will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as
applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i’s and/or business
entity's policies and procedures. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or
business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or
Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action
(including, but not limited to possible termination of employment,
personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Marine
Biology, Aquarium Biology, Aquaculture, Coral Conservation, or related
field. Experience culturing Hawaiian corals. SCUBA certification in
Advanced Open Water and Rescue. Previous authorization as a scientific
diver from an American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS)
accredited organization. Experience in minor construction and plumbing
related to coral or live rock aquarium maintenance. Coral
microfragmentation, coral spawning and larval propagation. Specialized
expertise in an area of Aquarium Biology or Aquaculture. Strong
knowledge in identifying Hawaiian corals in the field, coral
micropredators, and aquatic invasive species.
