I wanted to bring this information to coral reef scientists as it is an
opportunity to honor someone working in zoology or paleontology.

The National Academy of Sciences is seeking nominations for the *Daniel
Giraud Elliot Medal,* which recognizes meritorious work in zoology or
paleontology published no earlier than the last presentation of the medal
(2018). The medal is presented with a $20,000 prize.

Established through the Daniel Giraud Elliot Fund by gift of Miss Margaret
Henderson Elliot, it was first awarded in 1917 to Frank M. Chapman and has
recognized prestigious zoologists and paleontologists over the past 90
years. Recent winners are Gunter Wagner (2018), Jonathan Losos (2012),
Jennifer Clack (2008), Rudolf Raff (2004), Geerat Vermeij (2000). Other
distinguished recipients include Archie Carr, Libbie Hyman, Ernst Mayr,
Evelyn Hutchinson, Theodosius Dobzansky, and William Beebe – it is quite a
list. Note, however, that more junior nominations are also encouraged and
membership in the National Academy of Sciences is not required for the
nominee or letter writers. There are no citizenship requirements.

Nominations are due Oct 2 and require a letter from a nominator (not from
the institution of the nominee) and two supporting letters (including one
not from the nominee’s home institution). Further details can be found
here: https://www.nasonline.org/programs/awards/how-to-nominate.html and if
