Coral reefs worldwide are in major trouble due to human-driven forces like
climate change, pollution and the fishing industry. But research has
offered hope that human intervention can help restore these crucial
ecosystems after they’ve faced major damage.

Once-decimated swaths of coral reef off Indonesia’s coast are now bouncing
back

after years of efforts by the Mars coral reef restoration program. That’s
according to a recent study from an international group of researchers who
analyzed the project.

Meanwhile, record-breaking ocean heat

is fueling yet another mass bleaching event for coral reefs across the
globe. Bleaching isn’t always fatal for corals, and the process can be
reversed if its root cause is remedied. But it has major implications for
marine and terrestrial life in the meantime.

Marine ecologist Julia Baum joined PBS NewsHour’s William Brangham to talk
about what’s fueling extreme warming in the ocean, and what’s at stake for
these crucial ecosystems.

Cheers, Doug
