If you are interested in interdisciplinary small island research we
cordially invite you to the Small Islands Research in Tropical Regions
(SIRTRE) 2015 conference from September 15 to 16 in Makassar, Sulawesi,
Indonesia. There will be a focus on the Spermonde Archipelago close to
Makassar, but if you have any expertise from other tropical small
islands regions you are welcome to participate and share your knowledge.
Covered topics include social science, biogeochemistry, anthropology,

Small Islands Research in Tropical Regions – The Spermonde Archipelago
and other Case Studies
The 1st International Conference on Small Islands Research in Tropical
Regions – The Spermonde Archipelago and other Case Studies (SIRTRE 2015)
will take place in Makassar, Indonesia at the Universitas Hasanuddin
(UNHAS) from 15 to 16 September 2015.
Contributions are welcome on any aspect of small tropical island
research, including social science, biogeochemistry, anthropology,
ecology, conservation management and related fields such as
environmental history. The focus will be laid on the Spermonde
Archipelago but contributions from other tropical island systems are
In order to help plan the SIRTRE 2015 conference and ensure the
involvement and participation of local and international stakeholders an
organization committee has been established comprising of partners from
UNHAS and the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology in Bremen, Germany.
We hereby cordially invite you to submit contributions to the related
fields mentioned above. Oral or poster presentations will be accepted.
Slots for presentations will be allocated according to the scientific
merit of the abstracts submitted. The deadline for receipt of proposals
will be 30 June 2015. A draft programme will be published in July 2015,
together with the information on acceptance of the relative contributions.
The Conference will include a full range of academic sessions, keynote
lectures, social events and field trips in Makassar and possibly to
islands of the Archipelago.
The participation of early career scholars and postgraduate research
researchers from South-East Asia is positively encouraged.
