Island nations across the Pacific are faced with increasing challenges in
managing their coastal and marine resources stemming from growing demand,
changes in governance systems, and climate change. Fisheries in the
tropical Pacific range from local and data sparse to highly multinational.
They uniquely contribute to economic, social, and cultural wellbeing, yet
all have sustainability challenges. The University of Hawai‘i is poised to
play a critical role researching the biology, cultural politics, and
economic dynamics of Pacific fisheries from local to regional scales. This
endeavor will be inclusive of the region’s cultural diversity, past and
present colonial contexts, and geopolitical aspirations.

We are seeking four faculty who can contribute to a dynamic and
collaborative group of new and existing faculty in the UH system to address
the sustainability of tropical island and ocean fisheries. In addition to
research activities, all four faculty will be expected to contribute to the
creation and instruction of a new accredited graduate degree in fisheries
that will serve the needs of Hawai‘i and the Pacific region. It is
envisioned that this program will have multiple tracks to accommodate foci
in both the natural and social science components of the field. Initial
tenure track positions are for Coastal Fisheries Management and Policy in
the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM),
Fisheries Oceanography in the Oceanography Department, Fisheries Extension
in the Sea Grant College Program, and Marine Policy and Ocean Governance in
the Center for Pacific Island Studies.
