Dear Colleagues,

Thanks to NOAA fellows who for decades supported our transparent
communication. Some posts from Coral Reef Optimism invites us to take
action to recommend and lead by example to stop
unsustainable development since it is still possible and the technology can
help us to avoid further pollution and to stop direct destruction of corals
and coral reefs.

We all know now, even in remote islands there are anthropogenic (Climate
change and in general unsustainable development) causes of degradation. For
example, there is overfishing from Asia in the Eastern Pacific. Yes, very
far away industrial fisheries are taking place in international waters. If
scientists have been able to travel to those remote islands imagine the
ornamental fishers and other exploiters of the coral reefs reaching those
far away coral reefs.

In a recent NOAA´s report, published by the Miami Herald on 16/02/2024
— Florida's
coral reefs suffered intense die-offs after the record-breaking marine heat
wave in summer 2023, Scientists monitored nurseries of Acroporas finding
them all dead. However, anecdotal observations show colonies of other
species that were not broken to place them in the nurseries were still
alive...

Meanwhile geneticists find adaptation on corals to global warming that are
not stressful from other sources of stress, the only hope that we should
keep is to apply our knowledge to guide the implementation of a real
effective management at local and global level. For instance avoiding
political interests to remove the majority of mentions of climate change
from Florida State Law.

The United Nations have promoted many international agreements and in the
General Assembly this week has mentioned the triple crisis: Climate Change
Pollution and the loss of Biodiversity. To illustrate, yesterday the topics
were the following.

   - The new *Global Waste Management Outlook* report shows how the world
must move beyond waste era and turn rubbish into resource.
