Dear Irus and Coral List

It is touching that such a short encounter with Ruth should have had
such a memorable impression and entirely appropriate that you should
express your sadness. She was far too young at 56 and with so much still
to give to the world.

For those of you who didn't know her, I see that many obituaries are
starting to emerge which do her great justice. See for example:
https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/10/optimist-who-believed-saving-corals/574240/

My wife, Professor Barbara Brown, was her undergraduate teacher and her
PhD supervisor at Newcastle University. We both believe that her life
should be remembered and celebrated. We have suggested to the
International Society for Reef Studies (ISRS) (where she was President)
that it would perhaps be a fitting memory to establish some sort of
scholarship in her name and have pledged £5,000.

ISRS today (30 October) wrote to inform its members of her death and
that: "The Council will shortly be discussing what action we might take
in her memory. Thoughts would be welcome." Whether or not you are a
member of ISRS I am sure that the Corresponding Secretary (Professor
Rupert Ormond: rupert.ormond.mci at gmail.com) would listen to your views.

Our thoughts also go to her partner, Robin Burton-Gates, and her family.

Despite the fact that I met Ruth in person for only one day, her presence has lingered with me and greatly inspired my writing. She was such a strong and joyous person, and her work so important, that it is incomprehensible that she is no longer here.
